The 12th-century CE Mahaparinirvana Sutra manuscript from the Pala period, catalogued as Acc. No. 60.1653, depicts the Buddha’s final moments before entering Nirvana. It features the Buddha reclining on his right side, encapsulating his transcendence beyond the physical realm. Meticulously crafted and horizontally oriented, the manuscript integrates script and miniature artwork, reflecting a blend of literary and artistic traditions. It contains three illustrated panels, emphasising its use for both reading and ritual display. Decorative borders and geometric motifs enhance its ceremonial nature, embodying core Buddhist teachings: the Buddha’s passing as a culmination of enlightenment rather than destruction. This manuscript serves as both a sacred object and a meditative tool, fostering merit, insight into impermanence, and a deep connection to the Dharma. Through reverence and scholarly engagement, it acts as a living embodiment of the Buddha’s truth body (dharmakāya), guiding practitioners on their path to awakening.
